Q: Can I
tell if my drinking water is okay by just looking at it, tasting it, or smelling
it?
A:
No. None of the chemicals or microbes that could make you sick can be
seen, tasted, or smelled.
Q: Why
does my drinking water taste or smell "funny"? Will this smelly water make me
sick?
A:
Water that smells bad is usually caused by chlorine added to kill bacteria,
hydrogen sulfide, or algae and fungi.
Q:
Giardia and cryptosporidium can both make me sick. Which is the hardest to kill?
A:
Cryptosporidium is harder to kill than Giardia. Cryptosporidium is so
difficult to kill that water suppliers that use surface water as their source
depend on filtration to remove this germ rather than kill it.
Q: Do I really need to be concerned about the safety of the water that comes out of my tap?
A: Yes! According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "The American Public can no longer take the purity of our drinking water for granted." Over 700 organic and inorganic chemicals have been identified in drinking water and some of them are linked to cancer, birth defects, neurological disorders and a host of other afflictions.
Q: But my water tastes O.K. and I have been drinking it for years and haven't had any ill affects!
A: The average person will consume approximately 15,000 gallons of water in a lifetime. In many water supplies, there are contaminates that even in small quantities, can cause physical disorders as stated above. Most cities have up to 72 hours before they have to notify you that there is a problem with your water supply. Milwaukee and other cities have recently found fecal bacteria in their water supply resulting in some deaths and thousands of people ill. It is not an issue of whether your water is harmful physically or not, the issue is for such a small price, why even allow it to be a concern. Besides, for such a small price, you can have safe water that tastes great too!
Q: How expensive are the filters on my drinking water system?
A: If you average the cost out, over a year it will be approximately $4/per month for all the great tasting and good quality water you can drink.
Q: How often do I need to change the filters on my reverse osmosis system?
A: The pre-filters are changed every six to 12 months and the post-filters are changed 12 to 18 months. The reverse osmosis membrane is changed between two to five years, depending on your incoming water quality. Henry Water Purification Systems will notify you when it is time to change your filters, and which ones need changing, so you don't have to worry about keeping track.
Q: Do I need to be concerned about sodium in the water from my water softening system?
A: Absolutely not! The amount of sodium that is produced by a water softener is miniscule in comparison to your daily allowance for sodium intake.
