A whole house water filter system is comprised of at least one filter housing, at least one filter cartridge, Bracket w/Bolts, and a spanner wrench (included w/ housing). We generally recommend that a whole house water filtration system be comprised of two housings in series. However everyone needs at least a SEDIMENT Filter. City or Well water. The first serves as a course sediment filter to rid the water of large particles and sediment (sand, dirt, debris, etc.). The second (usually an activated carbon filter) provides finer filtration and absorbs chlorine and other contaminants that affect water taste and odor
Sediment filtration is probably the most basic of all water filters, removing the fine sandy particles sometimes found in municipal water supplies, especially after repair work to the pipeline.
For private water supplies, from streams or brooks, sediment filters remove leaves, twigs, and dirt particles. In well supplies, sandy or dirt particles.
Sediment filter elements can now filter down to fractions of a micron however, the most common sizes are from 1 to 25 microns. Anything less than this fouls very quickly and requires constant maintenance.
Elements are produced in a variety of materials. The one shown to the left is of spun polypropylene and is a 25 micron.

These Spin Down Sediment filters are for applications where you have extreme heavy sediment like sand and rust. If your on city water your probably better off using the standard 2.5" x 20" Cartridge filter.
